The Topp Twins in the Grand Ole Topp'ry

Well-loved New Zealand entertainers Lynda and Jools Topp are back on the road in October and November 2014 with a new show paying homage to country music greats, and celebrating original Kiwi country music.

Reminiscent of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, the Topps’ hilarious characters will host the show just as the Minnie Pearls did back in Nashville in the 1930s. Audiences can expect the best in country music from rockabilly to bluegrass, comedy and gospel, and even a visitation by Country Music Hall of Famers channelled in by the Topp Twins’ alter egos.

The Grand Ole Topp’ry will feature the Topp Twins with award-winning country artist Tami Neilson, alongside other special guests including the all-girl Johnny Cash band, The Johnnys and Cameron Luxton (X Factor NZ contestant) and Kiwi legend guitarist Phil Doublet.

The 13-centre tour begins in Invercargill on Wednesday 1 October before heading to Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Ashburton, Christchurch, Napier, Hamilton, Auckland, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Wellington and Palmerston North.

Lynda Topp says that just as Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry has changed over the years, like the Topp Twins, it has remained a cultural institution.

"We wish to pay respect to the legends of country music who have gone before us and also acknowledge the next generation of musicians who have, like us, been inspired, by past greats,”

Red Nose Day 2014

Red Nose Day will be held on August 22nd this year. Red Nose Day was established in New Zealand in 1989, back when Cure Kids was known as the Child Health Research Foundation.

It was an amazing national endeavour, and thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts of everyday Kiwis, researchers led by Professor Ed Mitchell — one of Cure Kids professorial research chairs — pioneered the “back to sleep” technique that is now the global standard for dramatically reducing the number of babies lost to cot death.

Today, Red Nose Day for Cure Kids has an even bigger goal, to keep funding research into the illnesses and conditions that affect the lives of Kiwi kids.

Everyday New Zealanders — people just like you — opened their hearts and have helped improve or prolong the lives of many Kiwi kids while we go for the ultimate goal: the cure.

Like Red Nose Day in 2012, Comedy for Cure Kids screened on TV3 in 2013. The television extravaganza helped us raise further awareness of our research efforts and, combined with a huge three week campaign, we reached a whopping $1.6 million in donations for Red Nose Day.

This year, Red Nose Day promises to be the biggest yet!

Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society's annual flagship event and one of the most important fundraising and awareness campaigns in the country. As well as providing an opportunity to raise awareness of cancer in New Zealand, Daffodil Day is a major funding source for the Cancer Society. We are proud to be regarded as one of the country's most trusted charities and this is reflected in our fundraising practices.

The daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring, whose bright yellow blooms remind us of the joys the new season will bring. It represents the hope there is for the 1 in 3 New Zealanders affected by cancer.

The donations we receive go towards vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, as well as providing a wide range of support services, information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce cancer risk, awareness campaigns and programmes for people affected by cancer.

ANZ is the proud principal sponsor of the event, and the hard work of its employees helps focus the nation's attention on our cause every year.

The Motoring Mad Motor Show and Swap meeting running again this year. This event is a fundraiser for the Mataura Scouts.
Being held at Tulloch Park in Mataura on the 2nd November.

Walk Shorts Wednesday

The idea behind the movement to resurrect the iconic walk short is to ultimately raise money for our local hospice. Most people in some way or another have been involved or know someone who has been involved and touched by hospice. They do any amazing job in our community.
With a bit of good humour we want to bring back some of the nostalgic memories of yesteryear, as much like hospice most people have also been touched by this iconic piece of attire at some stage in their life - whether it be from a parent or grandparent.

All you need to do is fill out the form on the WALK THE WALK page, upload a sweet photo of yourself kitted out in your walk shorts gear and that's it you're walking..! You could even be walking your way down the catwalk at H&J Smith on Wednesday 11th February 2015 at the Legs 11 Fashion Parade with a chance to win some great prizes from our great sponsors.
